Selah's picture dress

Selah is having pictures taken today. She will be in a patch of sunflowers so I thought this color would really POP! :) The color looks great on her.

There's no pattern. It's a tiered bottom and I attached a somewhat shirred bodice and shirred straps.

I made a big oops and it ended up being too long. I panicked as I tried to think of ways to correct it. Then it came to me "Bubble Skirt". So I hemmed the bottom, sewed a row of gathering stitches, folded it to the bottom of the 2nd tier and matched it all up and stitched it down. I loved it!!

The top I started shirring the bottom and realized that shirring the entire bodice would take me forever. So I did about 4 rows at the bottom and one at the very top. I love the effect of it! I'm very proud of my dress! :) Woo hoo!!

Now I need to make some bloomers and FAST!

Gift for my awesome friend!

I made this for my awesome friend K! I followed the pattern from the book Seams To Me by Anna Maria Horner. I love it! I have 7 more fabric yoyos to make though.

Pros: It was pretty easy and the board was fast, but the yoyos make take a bit.

Cons: I'm slow at handstitching. I did a blindstitch successfully and it felt great! It looked great. The yoyo took me a while and I don't know how to make it quicker.

Plus, I couldn't find my package of magnets within all the boxes I packed from the move. So I ripped a magnetic from the back of something and hot glued it onto the yoyo. It works. :)

I like it! I need to make one for myself!

2010-2011 Teacher Lanyard Made

Using the pattern I linked to yesterday, I made my lanyard for next year. It was really, really easy. I can see myself making lots of those for gifts in the future! :)

Time: 30 minutes max
Fabric: not much needed (except it needs to be long) or you could do a patchwork style and get around that and use scraps also.
Skills: sewing a straight line

Love it!!!

Conclusion on Ruffled Halter from Oliver + S

Here's my closing thoughts on sewing it!

- "Hey, it actually looks like the picture!" I also got lots of positive feedback when she wore it.

- It was easy to sew!!

- I so wish it was in a smaller size or that I was skilled enough to make it smaller.

- I transferred pattern markings correctly!! Woo Hoo! It makes things so much easier.

- Zebra print makes it really hard to tell the wrong side and right side.

- I will make this many, many times!

- I don't like printing patterns from the computer and lining everything up. I screw it up everytime!! I did go at the first row and somehow it went downhill.

I love Oliver + S patterns. I need to stop procrastinating and finish the music class blouse and skirt. But I'm itching to make a pair of cargo shorts for K.

Summer Top for Miss S

I just wish it came in smaller sizes. This was a size 18-24 months and it is big on her. I'll have to make some adjustments the next time I make it, but it's a keeper.

My goal is to make Miss A a shirt in this pattern too.

My current project

The Pattern:

I am working on attempt 2 of the Oliver + S Music Class Blouse for S. There was a lot of new techniques for me such as pintucks, collars, plankets for buttonholes, snaps.

What I learned from my first attempt:

Make notes as I work- I underlined lots of information that I knew I would overlook.

Practice my hand-sewing. My collar looked pitiful until I looked at some tutorials on blindstitching.

I need more practice on how to transfer pattern markings. Ugh- that was sad. I also needed to make sure I was making the marks on the right side.

I have the pattern pieces cut for round 2. It's on practice fabric- an old sheet. We'll see how it goes before I go to my real fabric.

Then off to the skirt.
